general program questions
What is Peak Smart Home?
Peak Smart Home is the first program in Yukon Energy’s suite of Peak Smart programs. The goal of Peak Smart Home is to shift peak demand for electricity using utility-controlled electric space and water heating.
How does this program reduce the demand for electricity during peak times?
When electricity demand is expected to spike, small, temporary changes are made to participating devices like thermostats and hot water tank controllers to reduce electricity use during high-demand periods.
- Thermostats: Before a peak, your thermostat may pre-heat your home by 1-2°C to ensure warmth during the event. During the peak, the thermostat reduces the temperature slightly to help conserve energy without affecting your comfort.
- Hot Water Tank Controllers: Instead of pre-heating, these controllers monitor the water temperature in the tank. During an event, the controller avoids using electricity until the water temperature drops below a preset level (typically 45°C), ensuring minimal impact on the availability of hot water for your home.
How will results from Peak Smart Home be shared?
- To stay informed about the Peak Smart Home program and its progress, including results, sign up for our Peak Smart newsletter.
- We plan to provide an update through the Peak Smart newsletter on the program’s progress in February 2025, followed by a more detailed update in Spring/Summer 2025.
Is there any cost to participate in this program?
- There is no cost to enroll eligible devices in the Peak Smart Home program. However, participants are responsible for purchasing and installing eligible devices.
- To make it easier to participate, we’ve partnered with the Yukon government to offer rebates on eligible devices. Our Peak Smart Home rebates are among the highest in Canada for similar programs, covering up to 75% of eligible purchase and installation costs for qualifying devices, up to $750 per device type. This means you could receive up to $1,500 in rebates for installing both thermostats and a hot water tank controller. Visit our Rebates page to learn more and apply today!
Will my electricity bill go down if I participate?
While we can’t guarantee any energy savings or bill reductions from participating in Peak Smart Home, programmable or internet-connected (“smart”) thermostats have been shown to reduce electricity consumption compared to traditional dial thermostats.
Can I leave the program if I don’t like it?
- Yes. To withdraw from the Peak Smart Home program, please call our program support center at 867-322-0183 (see our Contact Us information for call center hours).
- Once you withdraw, your participating devices will be removed from the program, and you’ll no longer be eligible for program incentives – unless you choose to sign up again later.
Will Yukon Energy help with the installation?
- Yukon Energy is not offering installation services for this version of the Peak Smart Home program. However, you can take advantage of rebates through the Yukon government’s Good Energy program to save on purchase and installation costs. Visit our Rebates page today to learn more!
- If you need assistance with purchasing or installing your devices, our program support center is here to help. Get in touch today!
What happens if I move?
- If you move, we encourage you to reach out to our program support center at peaksmart@clearesult.com or 867-322-0183 (see our Contact Us information for call center hours).
- If you’re not taking your devices with you, we recommend removing them from your app (Mysa or NeviWeb) to ensure they are no longer connected to the program.
Is support available in French / Le support du programme est-il disponible en français?
- Yes, program support is available through the program call center or email. Please visit our Contact Us page for contact information.
- Oui, l'assistance au programme est disponible par l'intermédiaire du centre d'appel du programme ou par courrier électronique. Veuillez consulter notre page « Contactez-nous » pour obtenir les coordonnées.
Peak Smart events
What are Peak Smart events?
A "Peak Smart event" is when a temporary, short-term adjustment is made to the settings of participating devices, like thermostats and hot water tank controllers, to help reduce electricity demand during periods of high usage. These events are scheduled when the demand for electricity is expected to spike – such as on cold winter mornings or evenings – or when the availability of power is limited (ex., if one of our generating stations is offline). Peak Smart events typically occur between October and April of each year but can occur year-round. These short, minor adjustments should have little to no impact on the comfort of your home, but they will make a difference in managing peak demand on the power grid.
How can I tell if I’m participating in a Peak Smart event?
- If you have devices from Sinopé, a banner will appear at the top of your screen in the NeviWeb app when a Peak Smart event is scheduled or ongoing. You’ll also see an “Eco” symbol on your thermostats during the event.
- If you have devices from Mysa, you can check your Mysa app to know whether you're currently in a Peak Smart event.
- All planned Peak Smart events will also be listed on our Peak Smart events page.
Will I lose control of my thermostats and/or hot water tank altogether?
No. You will always have full control of your thermostats and hot water tank, both during and outside of Peak Smart events, which you’re always able to opt out of.
How can I opt out of an event?
If you wish to opt out of a Peak Smart event while it’s in progress, you can easily do so through your device's app (Mysa or NeviWeb), or directly on your devices. For thermostats, simply adjust the temperature setpoint. For hot water tank controllers, press the button on the device to opt out.

I rent my home. Can I or my tenants participate in Peak Smart Home?
- The utility account holder for a residential home or suite is typically the eligible participant in the program.
- Landlords: If you are a landlord and your tenant has their own ATCO Electric Yukon or Yukon Energy account for their rental, your tenant can participate (if they meet the eligibility requirements).

What if I have a wood stove / supplement with wood heat?
Homes with any form of wood heat are welcome and encouraged to sign up for Peak Smart Home. However, please note that participating devices – such as thermostats or hot water tank controllers – must control electric-based appliances, such as baseboards, electric furnaces, or electric hot water tanks.
Do I need to occupy my space throughout the heating season (September to March)?
No, this requirement has been removed from previous versions of the program, so you do not need to occupy your home during the heating season.
Do I need to have an internet connection?
Yes, a consistent internet connection is required for participation. This can be through DSL, fiber, or satellite. Cellular-based internet (e.g., using your phone as a WiFi hotspot) is not eligible.
Is the program available throughout the Yukon?
Currently, the Peak Smart Home program is only available to homes serviced by the Yukon’s main power grid. This means that communities like Watson Lake, Burwash Landing, and Old Crow are not eligible at this time. To be notified if this changes,
